• Standard searching is FREE
• Viewing a full record uses credits the first time you view it; viewing a full record that you have already seen is FREE for 30 days
• Viewing a page image uses credits the first time you view it; viewing a page image that you have already seen is FREE for 30 days
• Performing an advanced search uses credits
• Performing a SmartSearch™ (see below) uses credits
• Producing a surname-distribution map (see below) costs 10 credits
• Your credits are valid for use on all of our databases
• Credits cost from under 4p each:
  £ 5 for 100 credits (5p each), or
  £ 14.95 for 400 credits (under 4p each; save £5)

Notes:
Viewing a full record/page image you have seen within the last 30 days costs no credits.

These are introductory rates while the census is still being transcribed; when certain census years are completed for England the number of credits per search/record/image viewed may be increased.

Credits have no monetary value — they are a means of ensuring fair access.

The total amount you spend in order to get the information you require will obviously vary depending on which features you use to get there. e.g. If you do a standard census search and then are able to tell which is the correct person from the results list and decide only to view the full record, it will cost a total of 5 credits. However, if you do an advanced census search (5 credits) then view the full transcript record (5 credits) then also decide to view the original page image (5 credits) the total would cost 15 credits. Of course, you will have saved time and credits by not viewing other records and you have got a .pdf of the orignal page for your documentation.
